This is essentially a classical piece of music, written by Richard Strauss in 1896. This short excerpt is known as the Sunrise fanfare, and you probably associate it with Stanley Kubrick’s classic film, 2001: A Space Oddity, based on Arthur C. Clarke’s novel of the same name. The fanfare has since become a bit of an icon itself, often used in science fiction parody, because nearly everyone will understand the reference.
However I dare you to experience the real thing: load it into your iPod or musical player of choice, get yourself out of bed in time and watch the Sun appear over the horizon while you’re listening to it.
Don’t forget it starts very quietly, a rumble low down near the limit of detection, so don’t turn up the volume too loud to start with – unless you want to wake everybody up within hearing distance!
